To Renew All Things in Christ

The Universal Church celebrates the Feast of Saint Pius X on August 21.  However, at Saint Pius X in Granger, we celebrate our Patronal Feast on the Sunday closest to the actual Feast.  This year, his Feast will replace the twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary time on the weekend of August 24 and 25.  We celebrate the Feast as a Solemnity, using incense at all the Masses, praying the prayers assigned to his Feast and hearing the readings for the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary time.  Under the direction of Jeremy Hoy, the Music Ministry works together to help our parish raise our voices in song.  In addition to the 5:30 Masses on Saturday and Sunday evenings, as well as the normally scheduled 7:00 Mass on Sunday morning, we celebrate a special Mass under a huge tent at 10:30.  Last year, Bishop Rhoades was the celebrant, and we estimate that the congregation numbered 2,500 people.  Following the Mass, we enjoy our annual parish festival, with food, drinks, and games for parishioners of all ages.  On Friday night, August 23, we will use the tent to host our annual Casino Night, also drawing large crowds.  The weekend affords us, the people of Saint Pius X Church, opportunities for prayer, praising God, asking for our Patron’s intercession, and enjoying one another’s company in the waning days of summer before school resumes.

Pope Saint Pius X served the Church as Bishop of Rome a hundred years ago.  He was elected Pope when he was serving as Patriarch of Venice, whose patron Saint is Saint Mark.  Because the winged lion is the Iconographic representation of Saint Mark, our parish and school mascot is the winged lion.  Saint Pius X lowered the age of receiving First Holy Communion to the age of reason, and we are grateful for that decision at every First Communion we celebrate here.

As Pope, his motto was “to renew all things in Christ.”  We have used that motto in our efforts to build up the parish community, as well as the facilities needed to serve our growing community.  We hope that through the intercession of our Patron, Saint Pius X, the Lord will use us at the beginning of this 21st century in renewing all things in Christ.
