The Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, established in 1857, comprises the 14 counties of northeastern Indiana and has a Catholic population of over 160,000, served by 81 parishes.  Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades was appointed ninth bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend by Pope Benedict XVI in November 2009.  The Diocese received national attention in 2011 when Bishop Rhoades issued the first-known imprimatur for an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch application to Confession:  A Roman Catholic App.

About Bishop Kevin Rhoades

Most Reverend Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades was born and grew up in Pennsylvania.  As a seminarian,  he did his theological studies in Rome at the North American College and the Pontifical Gregorian University.  He was ordained a deacon at Saint Peter’s Basilica in 1982.

He was ordained a priest of the Harrisburg Diocese on July 9, 1983, by then-Auxiliary Bishop William Keeler.   He served in a local parish for two years before he returned to Rome to earn advanced degrees in dogmatic theology and cannon law.  After returning to the United States, he served first as assistant to the chancellor and then as pastor of a local parish until he began teaching theology at Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary.  

In May 1997 he was named rector of the seminary, where he remained until 2004 when he was appointed by Pope John Paul II as Bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg.  He was ordained a bishop on December 9, 2004, by Cardinal Justin Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia. 

He served as Bishop of Harrisburg through 2009, when he was appointed the Ninth Bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne – South Bendby Pope Benedict XVI.  He was installed as 9th Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend on January 13, 2010.

Bishop Rhoades serves as Chair of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life, and Youth. He serves as a member of the Administrative Committee of the USCCB and the USCCB Committee on Doctrine and as a consultant to the USCCB Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty
